Speaking in Tongues

restout-pentecost-7

When you leave a cult you end up in some funny places, in my opinion it is hard to convert to Biblical Christianity when you thought you already were one.  One of the things I got caught up in was Pentecostal theology.  Specifically Assemblies of God, which to be honest is a pretty solid Christian denomination.  They teach law and gospel from the Bible and stick to mainline American Evangelical teaching in most respects.

That said, I do believe that they and others have err’ed in their teachings on a few important things.  One of them is the modern manifestation of the gift of tongues.  In this post I am going to present an abbreviation of this teaching from the primary texts that they use and then provide a sound response.  Since I am able to argue both positions I think the reader might find value in this post.

The Affirmative

I am going to present how the charismatic movement Biblically argues for the modern manifestation of the gift of tongues.  If you want to double check my analysis my primary sources for this particular piece are the following:

  1. Assemblies of God Website
  2. Foundations of Pentacostal Theology

The primary Biblical sources for this doctrine is found in 1 Corinthians 14 and Acts 2.  I am not going to paste the whole chapters due to length but feel free to take a moment to read both if you like.

In Acts 2 the verses that are accentuated are the following:

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4 KJV

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38 KJV

The argument here is that the referent to the gift of the Holy Ghost spoken of in verse 38 is the manifestation we see in verse 4.  Specifically, they teach that the gift one receives after baptism in water is the baptism of fire in the Holy Ghost.  They will typically back this up with a verse from Matthew:

“indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fireMatt 3:11 KJV

When one argues from 1 Corinthians 14 things get more complicated.  This is because there is alot more to work with in this chapter.  In fact, when I believed in this doctrine this was my go to chapter and it was primarily due to the following verse:

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.” 1 Cor 14:4 KJV

In my opinion that is the strongest verse in support of the modern manifestation of the gift of tongues.  This is because Paul uses the term “unknown tongue’.  The argument goes that there are different manifestations of tongues, those that are when one speaks in another earthly language and can be understood (Acts 2:11), and those that are of a heavenly language and are “unknown” thus they need a translator  (1 Cor 14:28).

Above I have put forward what I consider to be the best arguments from scripture, I have not covered every nuance as such a task is lengthy and unnecessary.  If you want my analysis on a specific verse not mentioned though feel free to drop it in the comments and we can go over it together.

Allow me to be honest, the above is not really a bad argument.  In fact I am more accustomed to debunking really obvious errors so this one is trickier.  In fact, I would say that this isn’t heresy at all.  I would classify the belief in the modern manifestation of the gift of tongues as heterodoxy rather than heresy.  It is something that we are free to disagree on, and after careful study I do believe that this belief is greatly mistaken.  Keep reading if you want to see why.

The Negative

The biggest problem with this doctrine is that they eisegete their material principle.  Which is assuming that the modern manifestation they speak of is actually taught in scripture.  Every time you read the verses I posted above you have to assume it is speaking of what we see on TBN.  In truth, there is no guide for such things in the Bible at all.  If you want to learn how to speak in tongues the way that it is taught today you need to buy a book or ask someone in your charismatic church to teach you.  I will save you the time and money and just break it down for you here and now.

You are supposed to clear your mind, meditate on a verse or something like that and start to pray.  At any time as you are “moved” you may then simply speak.  The words are not to cross through your logical mind they are just supposed to flow out of your mouth.  It takes a while to practice that disconnect as speaking in such a fashion is not typical but it can be done.

That’s it really, and the reason I cannot post clear scripture to teach you how to do this is because there is none.  There is only one verse I can think of that even half way describes such a thing and that is here:

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Rom 8:26 KJV

And the problem with the above verse being applied to the manifestation we see being taught today is that it doesn’t say we are the ones doing the groanings.  Instead it says the Spirit is the one doing it, and it doesn’t say through us as it clearly identifies the “Spirit itself maketh” and then follows with the verb “intercession”.  The prayer is never identified as a medium in this transaction.  There is no getting around that.  With this understanding of the above passage we wouldn’t even know if this is happening or not, we just trust in faith that intercession is transpiring on our behalf.  I find this verse very comforting because I know that God is speaking for me.

Clearly the teaching cannot be exegeted out of scripture, instead they have assembled verses that can be easily eisegeted to fit what it is that they are practicing.  That simply isn’t how theology works and we need to be intellectually honest with that.  Just to prove my point though I am going to review every verse posted above and show what is really going on in the text.

The problem with arguing that the referent of the gift of the Holy Ghost in verse 38 is verse 4 is that the manifestation of verse 4 is defined in verse 11.  That is, they were speaking in human languages.  I would instead argue that the actual referent of “gift” is the Holy Ghost.  Wow look how that works!  We can see this in other verses where the Holy Ghost is identified as sealing us unto redemption.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,   Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. Eph 1:13-14 KJV

Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. 2 Cor 1:21-22 KJV

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Eph 4:30 KJV

Notice we see this Gift of the Holy Ghost being associated with Baptism too.  I would argue that this promise is that we receive the Holy Ghost in Baptism as a work of God upon us.  For more on this please click HERE.  Even if you reject that though, it cannot be argued soundly that the gift received in Acts 2:38 is tongues, the gift IS God the Holy Ghost himself.

The second error in this brand of Pentecostal theology is that it teaches a second baptism.  Some charismatics will soften this by instead calling it a second blessing, but they still use the verses employed by the originators of Pentecostal theology to argue for a second baptism.  And once you remove that their teaching loses its Biblical foundation.  Allow me to demonstrate:

“There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

One Lord, one faith, one baptism,” Eph 4:4-5 KJV

I would argue that the above passage is rather clear.  There are not two baptisms, only one.  So to teach a second baptism is fallacious, even if one couches it as a “second blessing”.  The verse that they primarily use to teach a second baptism, which I also posted above, is found here:

“indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire” Matt 3:11 KJV

They say that the manifestation of tongues is a baptism of fire.  Many call this being “slain in the spirit”.  What they are doing is eisegeting their personal experiences into the text that they take out of context.  If you read the very next verse Matthew actually explains what he means by being baptized with fire:

“Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” Matt 3:12 KJV

That’s right, the baptism of fire is Hell.  You don’t receive two baptisms, you get one or the other.  You are either baptized into the death burial and Resurrection of Christ, or you are baptized in the eternal conscious torment of Hell.  Which do you want to be baptized in?  This is a really stupid verse to use for their theology, the only thing one has to do is read the very next verse.

They teach fire as a burning in one’s bosom, a feeling of intensity to the point where one is knocked over.  That is not the baptism of fire, Hell is.  This is why you don’t use your personal experiences to interpret scripture, you only rely on the scripture itself.

I almost don’t have to address 1 Corinthians 14, as I demonstrated above they eisegete their material principle anyways and rely on a poor proof-texting methodology that takes scripture out of context.  That being the case, I will still address the verse that caused me to believe in this doctrine.  As I stated above that is 1 Cor 14:4 KJV.

“He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.” 1 Cor 14:4 KJV

It was the words “unknown tongue” that hooked me on this teaching.  The problem is that this text doesn’t require “unknown” to mean Glossolalia or anything like that.  It can more easily mean speaking in a foreign language that nobody else in the room knows.  In fact that would be a much more logical rendering of the passage anyways as Paul insists that they have a translator (1 Cor 14:27-28).  It also makes sense that he wants them to prophecy for edification of the body as they didn’t have a complete New Testament yet, this was how they received the Word of God.

That one kinda hit me like a ton of bricks.  And it would make sense that Paul would want everyone to be able to do this (1 Cor 14:5 KJV) as it is a gift of the Holy Spirit that helped move the gospel so quickly across the world in their day to every tongue.

Conclusion

Is it sinning to practice the modern teaching of speaking in tongues?  I believe it is mistaken but I don’t believe it is a sin.  If you view it as a personal prayer language, as in praying directly from the heart, I don’t see that there is anything really wrong with that.  With such a definition it is no different than Hannah praying her heart out in front of the temple. (1 Sam 1:13 KJV).

With that said, I would advise not to deceive yourself or others by referring to it as the New Testament gift of tongues.  Furthermore I would not rely on it as a sole or even primary practice of prayer either.  After all, what does the Bible say comes out of the human heart?

“But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.  For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:” Matt 15:18-19 KJV

To be fair the above assessment would also apply to prayer in any language whether the words are formed or unformed.

Is it okay to pray from the heart?

Sure.

Is there a better way?

“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” Matt 6:9-13 KJV

If you want to pray but don’t know what to pray why not pray the Lord’s Prayer?  It covers just about everything anyways, and unlike the words from your heart it is pure, it is the very Word of God.  Another good prayer book is the Psalms.

Is your conscience burdened with sin?

Pray Psalms 51

Are you in need of encouragement?

Pray Psalm 23

Worn out from the politics in this wicked world?

Pray Psalms 2

My point is, even the argument of a prayer language doesn’t really pan out Biblically because God has even given us the very words by which to pray.

The Gospel

it-is-finished

In this post I am going to Biblically define the Gospel and why it is relevant to you.  In some of my more recent entries I have exposed false gospels and false teachings, so today I would like to write on the truth.

Some may not understand why it is that the Gospel matters to them, this is generally due to a poor understanding of the Law.  The curse of the law resides over anyone who is not in Christ (John 3:36)(Rom 7:1-3)(Gal 3:13).

Many Christians will try to water down the standard of the Law but it is Christ himself who defines that standard in his sermon on the mount.

“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Matt 5:48 KJV

This cannot be watered down, some try to say that the perfection in view above is the perfect state that God has you in now.  The problem with such a rendering is that Christ likens the perfection he says you need to be with the perfection of the Father.  The Father has always been perfect from eternity past into eternity future, in thought word and deed.

Even if you were to shape up and somehow become perfect, that would not make you perfect because sins still reside in your past.  Nobody can meet the perfect standard of the law, just as is stated here in scripture.

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not oneThere is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.  They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” Rom 3:10-12 KJV

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” Rom 3:23 KJV

All of us have sinned, fallen short of the standard the consequence of which is defined in scripture as being damned in the wrath of God.

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36 KJV

“For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.  The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.  Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.” Psa 5:4-6 KJV

Read the above passage in Psalms 5 once again, if you have not met the standard outlined in Matt 5:48, and are not eternally perfect as the Father in Heaven, then this passage in Psalms applies to you.

Jesus-Sermon-on-the-Mount-006-Henrik-Olrik-1830-1890-Copenhagen-Church-Altar

The word gospel simply means good news.  The Gospel is simply the good news that Jesus paid the price for your sins.  Jesus Christ has died to save you from your sins.  Paul clearly lays this out here:

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:1 Cor 15:1-4 KJV

Jesus Christ became sin, your sin, on the Cross and took your sins to the grave.

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Cor 5:21 KJV

“And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faithPhp 3:9 KJV

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” 1 Peter 2:24 KJV

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” Gal 3:13 KJV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:16-18 KJV

Furthermore Paul teaches us that this grace given to us is free for us.  We do not earn it through works of the law but it is bestowed upon us for God’s Glory.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. ” Eph 2:8-9 KJV

“Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.” Rom 3:28 KJV

0e1143611_blog-the-gospel-in-the-day-of-atonement

This is very good news indeed, the standard of the Law is too high for us to meet.  Since the standard is eternal perfection we cannot meet it even with help.  It can only be given to us by Christ, through his propitiatory sacrifice for all of our sins.  He is our true Passover lamb upon whom all our sins are placed.  Know this and believe it because he did it for you (Matt 26:28)

Below you will find two excellent, and short videos on this topic that explain the above post very well.

The False Gospel of SDA

95-Theses-672x372

This is the seventh post in a series on the Investigative Judgment, each of these builds consecutively on the prior so if you have not already read my most recent post please click HERE.

At the moment I intend for this to be my final post on the Investigative Judgment.  I feel I proved it wrong with the very first post on this anyways, but for the sake of those who might be stuck in the doctrine I chose to continue.  To go any further than this might run this risk of giving the reader the false impression that they are in the Jury box over and against God’s Word on this.  The Bible is so clear that the Investigative Judgment is false that to hold to it after sound study is to be in open rebellion to the very Word of God.

The biggest problem with the Investigative Judgment isn’t that it is false eschatology.  In fact, I would recommend to anyone to be rather forgiving on eschatology in general, I think there is a call for Christian freedom in disagreeing on the particulars of the end times.

Where we are not free is to turn our eschatological views into a false Gospel, Paul gives us a clear warning on such things here:

“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Gal 1:6-9 KJV

Paul places the tampering of the Gospel in the realm of “anathema” as some versions put it.  He even goes so far to say that if another apostle or angel teaches a false gospel that the curse of anathema resides upon them.  If the apostles themselves do not have the authority to teach a false gospel then neither does the church, or any denomination thereof.  Before laying out the False SDA Gospel that comes out of the Investigative Judgment I want to demonstrate the real one Biblically so that you can see the juxtaposition.

4193015

What is the Gospel? What shall we teach so as not to be anathema?  Fortunately Paul very succinctly defines this in another one of his letters.

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” 1 Cor 15:1-4 KJV

Above see that Paul says that we are saved from our sins and wicked nature by the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  One may ask then, how does one receive this gift upon them?  Fortunately Paul also explains this in his letter to the Ephesians.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Eph 2:8-10 KJV

I kept verse 10 in my quote above as without it this becomes a passage used to negate good works entirely.  They are important, necessary even, but I would qualify that they are necessary for Christians and not for salvation as the placement of Good Works clearly transpires chronologically after Justification in the above passage.

Notice in verse 8 the words “it is the gift of God“.  What is the referent of the word “it”?  Specifically, what gift am I receiving from God?  Faith or Grace?  I would argue grammatically that both faith and grace are gifts received from God.  So Biblically God gives us the Faith by which we then receive Grace from him unto salvation.

Fortunately Paul also explains a means of Grace, in how Faith is given to us as as this gift from God.

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Rom 10:17 KJV

For those curious, I recommend reading the preceding text on your own by clicking HERE.  You will see there is a preaching factor in this as well.  That is a bunny trail in and of itself for another post at another time.

Here is the point though, the Bible teaches the Gospel and how one receives it.  It teaches that we are saved by Grace alone through Faith alone.  We do not get to take credit for our salvation, or help Jesus out in any way.  Even if you have changed since accepting Christ and are not wallowing in the sins of your past any longer, you still need Jesus just as much for your salvation as you did the day before you called upon the name of the Lord.  Know that when you are in Christ you are covered in the righteousness of God, not your own righteousness.

“And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith” Php 3:9 KJV

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Cor 5:21 KJV

Adventist doctrine undermines the gospel with their eschatology.  The reason this happened is because in the Millerite movement they tried to predict the end of the world and the second coming of Christ down to the date.  This is not terribly unlike the Harold Camping movement a few years ago.  Just like with Camping, the Millerite movement adjusted their dates a few times, then after 1844 came and went they claimed spiritual fulfillment to hide from their shame of rebelling against God’s Word (Matt 24:26).

The Spiritual fulfillment that the SDA claimed morphed through many forms but eventually rested on the Investigative Judgment doctrine that I have written about in my most recent posts.  The tragedy of this is that it resulted in the SDA teaching a false gospel.  Even though most Adventists I know would likely agree with the entire post I have presented to this point, their problem is that the Investigative Judgment invariably contradicts the Biblical teaching of the Gospel.

First of all the Investigative Judgment teaches that our sins are not blotted out until the completion of the entire eschatological process.  A false teaching of the SDA which I refuted HERE.

“The work of the investigative judgment and the blotting out of sins is to be accomplished before the second advent of the Lord. Since the dead are to be judged out of the things written in the books, it is impossible that the sins of men should be blotted out until after the judgment at which their cases are to be investigated.” Great Controversy 1888 Page 485, Ellen White

Second the Investigative Judgment teaches that once our sins are blotted out, we must stand before a Holy God without a mediator.  They teach that this is the close of probation, and that those who do not keep the ten commandments perfectly at this point are not saved.

“Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of Christ shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of a holy God without a mediatorTheir robes must be spotless, their characters must be purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and their own diligent effort they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While the investigative judgment is going forward in heaven, while the sins of penitent believers are being removed from the sanctuary, there is to be a special work of purification, of putting away of sin, among God’s people upon earth.”  The Great Controversy, Pg. 425 Ellen White

Above Ellen is teaching that a combination of your efforts and the Grace of God must bring you to a state of absolute perfection during a probationary period on planet earth.  So to that I would say:

How is this working out for you?

Are you perfect yet? (Matt 5:48)(1 John 1:8)

Well you better be if you expect to make it in the end times as she says that your efforts are required!

What Ellen White teaches is a wicked false Gospel from the pit of Hell. The Bible teaches that we are saved by Grace alone through Faith alone, even in the end times.  Your best piety will not save you, only Jesus will save you.

Jesus didn’t just die for your worst deeds, he died for your best good works too.  Even at your very best you either failed to Love God with all your heart or were puffed up with pride in your ability to do something right.  The Sabbath will not even extra save you in the end times.  If that is your extra assurance for the last days like it was for me you are clinging to an idol.

Repent and trust in Christ and Christ alone, your true Sabbath rest.

The 23 Assumptions

P004711_White_Ellen_Gould_005_big

This is the Sixth post in a series on the Investigative Judgment, each of these builds consecutively on the prior so if you have not already read my most recent post please click HERE.

Below is a summary of the 23 Biblical assumptions required to believe in the Investigative Judgment.  I did not compile this list myself, it was arranged by another former Adventist I know by the name of Geoff Bull, and the original work was of course done by Desmond Ford.  If you are SDA or used to be then you have heard that name before.  He was the Adventist theologian that sunk the Investigative Judgment with his extensive exegesis in the original languages.  Furthermore, he identified 23 assumptions one must swallow to even consider the Investigative Judgment.  None of these assumptions have any strong textual support and if a single one is false the whole doctrine fails.

Assumption 1
That the KJV translation of Daniel 8:14 as 2300 days is correct.
Twenty-five times Daniel uses the Hebrew word ‘yowm’ for days…
…however, Daniel does not use ‘yowm’ in 8:14…
…instead the ambiguous “evening-morning” (‘ereb boqer’) is used…
…which most exegetes apply to the evening and morning burnt offerings…
…if the exegetes are correct, it means only 1150 days are in view.

Assumption 2
That these 2300 “days” equal 2300 years…
…even though it is impossible to prove that the year-day principle is a biblical datum
…and even if we could, ‘days’ are not mentioned in either 8:14 or 9:24…
…so there is no basis to apply the principle in these instances.

Assumption 3
That these 2300 years begin centuries before the “little horn” began his attack on the sanctuary.
In the context, the 2300 days has been understood by almost all commentators as applying to ‘the length of time’ the little horn is trampling the sanctuary underfoot and suspending its daily offerings.

Assumption 4
That the 2300 years begin at the same time as the seventy weeks.
The Hebrew ‘chathak’ can mean either “cut” or “decree,”…
…but there is no way of proving that the 490 is ‘cut off’ from the 2300.

Assumption 5
That it is possible to be certain of the exact year that the seventy weeks begin…
…and is the decree to begin when God declares it or when an earthly king proclaims it?

Assumption 6
That the decree of Artaxerxes recorded in Ezra 7 has to do with the restoring and building of Jerusalem.
There is nothing in Ezra 7 that says this.
The context says that this decree, like those of Cyrus and Darius, had to do with the temple.
The magistrates were to enforce the temple laws.
Ezra 6:14 places this decree among the temple decrees.

Isaiah 45:1-2.13 “Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus…I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts.”

If Cyrus is the king who the Lord appointed to rebuild Jerusalem.
It was about 538 BC when he decreed the captive Hebrews could return under Zerubbabel’s leadership.

Assumption 7
That the decree of Ezra 7 “went forth” in (or by) 457 BC when Ezra had arrived in Jerusalem and set to work.
Ezra says the decree had been announced at least six months earlier.
There is nothing in Daniel to say that this decree should be dated from the time of its implementation rather than its enunciation.

Assumption 8
That 408 BC was the time when the restoration of the city was completed…
…even Adventist scholars admit this is impossible to prove.

Assumption 9
That AD 27 was the date of Christ’s baptism…
…also impossible to establish an exact date.

Assumption 10
That AD 31 was the date of the crucifixion…
…almost all scholars hold to other years, not this one…
…evidence from Grace Amadon’s research, often used by SDAs, is based on doubtful assumptions that is even admitted by the SDA Bible Commentary.

Assumption 11
That AD 34 was the date of the gospel going to the gentiles…
…though there is no way of proving that AD 34 was the time of the stoning of Stephen…
…Acts 13:46 suggests the turning to the gentiles at a later date.

Assumption 12
That the 2300 days end with the beginning of the anti-typical Day of Atonement…
…even though the Day of Atonement revolved around the sacrifice for sin, an event which took place about eighteen centuries earlier.
The book of Hebrews clearly applies the Day of Atonement in antitype to Christ’s priestly offering of Himself on Calvary.

Assumption 13
That until this date was reached, Christ was doing work prefigured by the first apartment outside the veil…
…even though Hebrews tells us that the work of that apartment symbolized the ineffectual offerings of the Levitical era when men had restricted access to God, and experienced outward ceremonial cleansing rather than perfection of the conscience.

Assumption 14
That the work symbolized by the second apartment of the sanctuary was not to begin till over 1800 years after the cross…
…even though Hebrews 9:8, 12, 24, 25; 10:19, 20; 6:19, 20 says that Christ entered “within the veil” at His ascension…
…the sprinkling of the blood on the mercy seat took place immediately after the shedding.

Assumption 15
That the sanctuary of Daniel 8:14 means the sanctuary in heaven…
…even though the context is about the sanctuary on earth.

Assumption 16
That “cleansed” is an accurate translation in Daniel 8:14…
…’tsadaq’ is usually translated “to be just, to be righteous, to be put or made right”.

Assumption 17
That the sanctuary on the Day of Atonement was cleansed from defilement occasioned by the confession of sin and ministration of blood…
…even though Numbers 19:13 indicates that the sanctuary was defiled when a person sinned, regardless of whether confession was made…
…and that in most cases, blood never went into the sanctuary.

Assumption 18
That the cleansing of the sanctuary in 8:14 has to do with the sins of the professed believers in Christ…
…even though the context has to do with a defilement accomplished by Antichrist…
…not the host of God’s people.

Assumption 19
That this ‘cleansing’ of 8:14 is also found in Daniel 7 in its judgment scene and that the latter also has to do with the investigation of the sins of the saints…
…even though in Daniel 7 and 8 it is a wicked power that is the focus of the judgment.

Assumption 20
That Revelation 14:7 has to do with the same Investigative Judgment of the sins of the saints…
…even though John never uses the word ‘krisis’ other than in a negative sense for unbelievers…
…and although the very next verse tells us that it is Babylon that is the focus of the judgment.

Assumption 21
That verses like Acts 3:19 point to the Investigative Judgment…
…even though no such verse studied in context yield this conclusion.

Assumption 22
That the period terminates in October 22, 1844, as the beginning of the anti-typical Day of Atonement…
…even though October 22, 1844 was not the day observed by contemporary Jews…
…or even by the majority of Karaites…
…neither is there evidence that the baptism of Christ, or the stoning of Stephen took place on the Day of Atonement, which would have been necessary if the 49 years, the 434, 490, and 2300 years are each precise in terminus.

Assumption 23
That Ellen G. White was correct when she wrote: “I saw that God was in the proclamation of the time in 1843. …Ministers were convinced of the correctness of the positions taken on the prophetic periods” (SG, p. 232).
Ellen was writing here about the 1843 terminus, not October 22, 1844.
Ellen also used the plural ‘periods’ ending then, not just one period…
…William Miller had over a dozen, including the 6000 years, the seven times, the 1335 days, etc…
…and they were all wrong!

I understand that a healthy degree of speculation is in order when one studies eschatology.  But 23 assumptions with no clear textual support is more than I am willing to swallow.  But that is not my biggest problem, consider that when one does swallow those assumptions they lead to a false gospel that contradicts clear scripture.  Why would I be willing to do that?

The pioneers of SDA were willing to do such things because they were ashamed of setting dates for the second coming.  Instead of repenting they claimed spiritual fulfillment and hid behind more false doctrine.  Because of this sin countless have suffered in false teachings since.

The Day of Atonement

6990468_orig

This is the fifth post in a series on the Investigative Judgment, each of these builds consecutively on the prior so if you have not already read my most recent post please click HERE.

I am going to focus in on Leviticus chapter 16 and its alleged connection to Daniel 8. SDA teach that Leviticus 16 is pointing to anti-type fulfillment in the Investigative Judgment.  Before digging into this post I recommend reading through that chapter yourself first by clicking HERE.  I will not paste it in entirety due to length.

To summarize the SDA position, they argue that the referent of the word translated “cleansed” (Daniel 8:14) in the KJV is the Leviticus 16 day of atonement.

“And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.” Daniel 8:14 KJV

Their problem here is that such a claim cannot be proven.  First of all, the word cleanse in the KVJ as defined in the year 1611 does not require an atonement referent.  You could argue that one of the definitions is a cleansing from sin, but other definitions include restoring and consecrating inanimate objects:

Untitled Source: KJV 1611 Dictionary

The intent of the actual language is made more clear when you read the verse in a modern translation.  See the same verse below in several scholarly modern versions and discern for yourself.

And he said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.” Daniel 8:14 ESV

He said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the holy place will be properly restored.” Daniel 8:14 NASB

“And he saith unto me, Till evening–morning two thousand and three hundred, then is the holy place declared right.” Daniel 8:14 YLT98

As you can see from above we are looking at something that was desecrated and then put back in its rightful place.  The word “cleansed” still conveys this idea in 1611 English, but to take that word and then eisegete an atonement referent is poor Biblical analysis.  Based on the general context of the chapter 8 I would argue that the vision is saying the temple will be desecrated or even destroyed for a time and then after the fulfillment it will be restored and functioning as normal.  The day of atonement is simply not in view.  This is further made clear when we run a concordance check on the Hebrew word that the KJV translates as “cleased”.

Untitled

According to Biblehub.com we see that the word in Daniel 8:14 only appears once in the whole Bible.  Based on the above no clear correlation can be made thematically or linguistically.  The supposed connection simply cannot be proven in clear scripture.  Without that you don’t have the investigative judgment because there there is no supposed heavenly fulfillment of the day of atonement anti-type SDA need so badly for their theological framework.

That being the case though what is Leviticus 16 actually about anyways?  If fulfillment of the types and shadows cannot be found in an Investigative Judgment where can we find them?  After all, we are promised by Jesus Christ that all scriptures in the Old Testament speak of him.

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,” John 5:39 ESV

“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” Luke 24:27 ESV

In these two verse above we have Jesus telling us that we can expect to find all things in the Old Testament fulfilled in him.  Since our source for such interpretation is the New Testament it is there that we go to find when and how such things in the Old were fulfilled in Christ.  What I have just described is a sound Biblical material principle for interpreting the Old Testament.  I go into detail in this rule HERE if you are interested in a breakdown.  Below I will use this rule to interpret Leviticus 16.

Day of Atonement Breakdown

The beginning of Leviticus 16  starts out describing the Holiness of God and how one cannot simply walk into the presence of God (Lev 16:1-3).  Before performing his duties on the day of atonement the High Priest would have to clean his entire body, remove his decorative High Priest attire, and don simple white linen.  We see this described in verse 4.

“He shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body, and he shall tie the linen sash around his waist, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and then put them on.” Lev 16:4 ESV

Below is the Clarke Commentary on this verse which I believe provides applicable cultural context.

“He shall put on the holy linen coat – He was not to dress in his pontifical garments, but in the simple sacerdotal vestments, or those of the Levites, because it was a day of humiliation; and as he was to offer sacrifices for his own sins, it was necessary that he should appear in habits suited to the occasion. Hence he has neither the robe, the ephod, the breastplate, the mitre, etc.; these constituted his dress of dignity as the high priest of God, ministering for others and the representative of Christ: but now he appears, before God as a sinner, offering an atonement for his transgressions, and his garments are those of humiliation.” Clarke Commentary Vol I Pg 561

I would argue based on my above stated material principle that this donning of the simple sacerdotal vestment is the shadow which typifies how our High Priest, Jesus Christ, humbled himself in the incarnation which was part of and in preparation for the anti-type fulfillment of the Day of Atonement.

“who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Phil 2:6-8 ESV

In Philippians we see Paul defines the incarnation as the humbling of Christ, then states he fulfilled his purpose by dying on the cross.  The shadow of this is seen in the atonement ceremony in which the priest would make an offering in the Most Holy.

“And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times. “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses.” Lev 16:14-16 ESV

The anti-type fulfillment of this we find in the New Testament where we see that Christ bore our sins to death.  So in the propitiatory fulfillment Christ is both Priest and Sacrifice.

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Cor 5:21 ESV

“. . . and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed” 1 Peter 2:24 ESV

Here in Hebrews we see that under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit the author establishes his context in the old covenant type and shadow and defines them as insufficient.

“but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing (which is symbolic for the present age)….”

The grammatical referent here for present age is the period of time in which the day of atonement was efficacious in type and shadow, specifically, the Old Covenant era.

“…According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.” Heb 9:7-10 ESV

Above we see he makes it clear that the Leviticus 16 ceremonies were lesser types pointing to Christ.  We see this in the words “until the time of reformation” which the Clarke Commentary analyzes as follows:

“The time of reformation, καιρος διορθωσεως, the time of rectifying, signifies the Gospel dispensation, under which every thing is set straight; every thing referred to its proper purpose and end; the ceremonial law fulfilled and abrogated; the moral law exhibited and more strictly enjoined; (see our Lord’s sermon upon the mount); and the spiritual nature of God’s worship taught, and grace promised to purify the heart: so that, through the power of the eternal Spirit, all that was wrong in the soul is rectified; the affections, passions, and appetites purified; the understanding enlightened; the judgment corrected; the will refined; in a word, all things made new.” Clarke Commentary, Vol 5, Pg 746

In the following verses the Hebrews writer provides the interpretation of the old covenant types and shadows and their fulfillment in Christ.

“But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” Heb 9:11-14 ESV

Notice the text above speaks of an event that has already transpired.  If the events above already transpired by the time Hebrews was written that would preclude an 1844 fulfillment as the year 1844 didn’t come until many years after the first century had long passed.  Some SDA will attempt to argue that the tabernacle in the above verse is the heavenly sanctuary.  The problem with that interpretation is that a more Biblical reading would be understanding this as speaking to the very Body of Christ (John 2:19-21).  That is to say, the more perfect Temple not made by hands that Christ came through is the incarnation.

As I argued HERE, Christ ascended directly to the Most Holy upon his ascension.  Thus securing the salvation for all that the old covenant day of atonement pointed to.  In Christ’s ascension he was exalted as we see here:

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Phil 2:9-11 ESV

Above is the antitype fulfillment of the conclusion of the High Priests work in the Temple, he bathes once more and removes his simple linens to replace with his full High Priestly garments once again.  Going from his humbled state to his Priestly, typifying in fullness the humbling of the incarnation, atonement for sins, and exaltation.

The Scapegoat

The scapegoat is a very important part of the Day of Atonement that also finds its antitype fulfillment in Christ.  SDA disagree, they argue that the scapegoat typifies the Devil, who they say ultimately bears our sins.

“It was seen, also, that while the sin offering pointed to Christ as a sacrifice, and the high priest represented Christ as a mediator, the scapegoat typified Satan, the author of sin, upon whom the sins of the truly penitent will finally be placed.” The Great Controversy, p. 422.

“As the priest, in removing the sins from the sanctuary, confessed them upon the head of the scapegoat, so Christ will place all these sins upon Satan, the originator and instigator of sin.” The Great Controversy, p. 485.

“Their sins are transferred to the originator of sin.” Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 475.

I find this heretical, there is nowhere in the new testament where it ever says that the Devil bears our sins.  The manner in which one determines antitype fulfillment is from reading clear texts in the new testament and lining them up with the old.  There are no texts whatsoever that teach the Devil bears our sins.  In fact the Bible teaches the opposite!

. . . and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed 1 Peter 2:24 ESV

The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29 ESV

“…and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:6 ESV

Instead what we have with the scapegoat is another type and shadow of Christ, this time taking our sins far away from us, as far is the east is from the west.  Into the wilderness where they reside on us no longer.

“as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12 ESV

To summarize, my rejection of the SDA heavenly sanctuary doctrine stems from an utter lack of clear scripture in the affirmative.  I would need a verse that plainly states “there doth exist a heavenly sanctuary in which the earthy was a replica thereof”.  If you can find a verse that says that then I will submit to it, but I refuse to read between the lines with my imagination. That said, I hope you have enjoyed my study on the day of atonement.  Please let me know what you think in the comments, even if you disagree with my analysis.

490 Year Prophecy

hebrew

This is the fourth post in a series on the Investigative Judgment, for the previous entry please click HERE.  This post does not cover the 70 Weeks Prophecy in Daniel 9 but rather the linking of the two chapters that is asserted by SDA as part of the Investigative Judgment motif.

Based on my conclusions from the previous post on Daniel 8:14 we are working with 1150 literal 24 hour days but we don’t have a starting point on a calendar by which to see when they began and when they ended.

This is the same problem for SDA who are trying to figure out when the 2300 years is supposed to start.  In order to solve that problem they asserted that the visions in Ch 8 and Ch 9 are connected.  The reason that they want to do this is because in Daniel 9:25 we see the following:

“Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one,….” Daniel 9:25 ESV

It is asserted that the “going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem”  transpired in 457 B.C. when Nehemiah was commanded to rebuild the wall by King Artaxerxes (Neh 2:1). As an aside, scholars don’t actually know for sure if Dan 9:25 is a prophecy concerning Nehemiah or King Cyrus (Isa 44:28).  Either is just as possible as the other as Daniel 9:25 is not clear enough to decisively pick one over the other.  Scholars generally pick the one that works best for their brand of eschatology.

That said, SDA go with Neh 2:1 which can be dated to 457 B.C.  If you add 2300 modern calendar years to 457 B.C. you arrive at 1844.  If you add 2300 Jewish calendar years to 457 B.C. you arrive at 1812.  If you account for leap year you end up somewhere in 1811.  My point in mentioning this is that there exists a lot of flexibility in date setting.  Because of this I would recommend viewing Biblical time prophecies as pointing to a period of time rather than a specific year or day. SDA don’t take this into account though as they have to stay with the ending date that William Miller and Ellen White selected.

Getting to the point, the biggest problem for SDA here is that in order to have the start date of 457 B.C. for the 2300 years they need the vision in Daniel 8 to be connected to the vision in Daniel 9.  Below is a diagram illustrating my point.  Notice that the orange 2300 year prophecy must start at the same time as the blue 490 year prophecy in their motif, otherwise you don’t have 1844.

TimeSpan

In order to effect this interpretation SDA focus in on a few Hebrew words in Daniel 9.  Lets take a close and see what they mean.  I am not a Hebrew scholar nor do I claim to be, my sources in this are biblehub.com, a good website that allows you to look at every verse in its original language breakdown, and Investigating the Investigative Judgment by Larry Pahl.  For those of you unfamiliar with his work, he is an SDA theologian at Andrews University.

The first verse we will look at is where Gabriel is identified and a prior vision is referenced.

while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice.” Daniel 9:21 ESV

The word in question here is transliterated “techillah” and can be translated as “at the first” or “at the beginning” depending on what version you are using.

Daniel 9.21

In order to connect the visions of chapters 8 and 9 SDA will argue that the referent to “at the first” is the prior vision Daniel had received 14 years earlier in Ch 8.  The problem with this is rather than saying “the prior” vision he is saying the “first”.  So logically it would be a referent to the first vision received in this set of three (3).

Since the vision in Ch 7 is received prior to Ch 8 in a set of three (3) concluding with the one in Ch 9 it therefore follows that the “vision at the first” is the one in Ch 7.  While it is true that all three visions are received chronologically, that in no way requires that they all be addressing the same topic or have the same start and or end dates.

That isn’t even touching the biggest problem with asserting the vision in Ch 8 is linked to Ch 9.  See below that Gabriel specifically states that the vision he gave in Ch 8 is to be sealed.

“The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true, but seal up the vision, for it refers to many days from now.” Daniel 8:26 ESV

I would argue that contextually the “many days from now” is a referrent to verse 17 concerning the same vision:

“…Understand, O son of man, that the vision is for the time of the end.” Daniel 8:17 ESV

So the command is given to Daniel to seal up the vision for many days, which I would argue is the same as “the time of the end”.  Whether you interpret that as the first advent of Christ or the second, you cannot understand Ch 9 as a clarification of Ch 8.  This is because it was commanded for Ch 8 to be sealed for many days.

The vision in Ch 9 was given to Daniel only 14 years later and long before any of the events of either visions were fulfilled.  Furthermore, if SDA were to argue that the “many days” is only 14 years that would undermine their argument that the seal of this Ch 8 vision was opened during and after the Millerite movement.  You can’t have it both ways.

To summarize, if the SDA were correct that Ch 9 is providing the start date of the vision in Ch 8 then they are saying that a seal placed by the Kingdom of Heaven on a vision was unsealed long before the Messenger of Heaven said it would be.  In essence, they present a self defeating Biblical argument that creates unnecessary contradictions and falls apart when examined with any scrutiny.  The simple truth is that we can’t Biblically assert a start date for the time prophecy in Daniel 8:14.

This is not that big of a deal, there are many time based prophecies in the Bible in which no start or end date is given in the text.  Instead in Ch 8 we are given a prophecy of an event that will last a certain length of time, most likely 1150 days.

If I were to search through history looking for fulfillment I would seek out an event where the Temple was destroyed or desecrated in some fashion or another by a powerful individual who is subordinate to a greater power (hence the little horn), and then see if the destruction remained for about 1150 days.  This is not a study I have performed yet but I am providing a link below to the work of a Biblical scholar who has for those interested in further reading.

The 2300 Year Prophecy

manuscripts

This is the third post in a series on the Investigative Judgment, for the previous entry please click HERE.

The interpretation that the SDA Church uses with regards to Daniel 8:14 is another key component of the Investigative Judgment and will likely take several posts to cover properly.  If this verse could possibly be read in a way that doesn’t work for SDA theology that means that 1844 was just another year on the calendar and that nothing of any eschatological significance took place.

Before getting started lets take a close look at the verse in question:

“And he said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.” Daniel 8:14 ESV

There are numerous assumptions that come into play in the SDA interpretation of this verse but what I am going to focus on here is the concept of 2300 years. It is my assessment that this interpretation is predicated upon the following:

  1. That 2300 evenings and mornings means 2300 24 hour days
  2. That 2300 24 hour days really mean 2300 years
2300 evenings and mornings means 2300 24 hour days

I do not think that the most logical interpretation of Daniel 8:14 is 2300 days, but rather 2300 evenings and mornings.  In the King James, which was used by early Adventists it does say days.  But according to all of the commentary I have read on this verse the Hebrew says ‘evenings and mornings’.

Daniel 8.14

Source: Biblehub.com

In most places in scripture when a day is referenced the transliterated Hebrew word “yom” is used:

 Gen 1.5

Source: Biblehub.com

Working with the term evenings and mornings that would then mean 1150 24 hour days not 2300 as every day has one (1) evening and one (1) morning contained within it.

To be sure let us take a closer look at the preceding context of Daniel 8:14

“It became great, even as great as the Prince of the host. And the regular burnt offering was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was overthrown. And a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering because of transgression, and it will throw truth to the ground, and it will act and prosper. Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who spoke, “For how long is the vision concerning the regular burnt offering, the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and host to be trampled underfoot?” Daniel 8:11-13 ESV

The most logical understanding of the evenings and mornings in Daniel 8:14 would then be the evening and morning sacrifices in which the “regular burnt offering” was given in the Old Covenant Temple.  It would therefore follow that 1150 24 hour days is a more accurate period of time than 2300 as we are talking about a numerical amount of evenings and mornings rather than straight days.  This is rather damaging to SDA doctrine because without the 2300 literal days they have no point with which to build their next premise.

2300 24 hour days really mean 2300 years

As I have just shown above we don’t even have 2300 days anymore we have 1150.  But could Daniel 8:14 possibly mean 1150 years?  If that were the case then it would have ended a long time before 1844.  Even still, this is a critical thesis for SDA who claim that the ‘day to year principle’ is a key tool for unlocking prophecy.

I would argue that ‘day to year principle‘ isn’t even a thing.  This was an interpretive technique invented by scholars who favored a brand of eschatology called Historicism.  There is only one verse in the Bible that outright uses days to typify years and it is not even in an eschatological genre.

“According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.” Num 14:34 ESV

However we also see a day representing a thousand years:

“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” 2 Ptr 3:8 ESV

And a Basket:

“And Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days.” Gen 40:18 ESV

And a 12 hour period of time:

“Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.” John 11:9 ESV

And a branch:

“Then Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days.” Gen 40:12 ESV

And a 24 hour period of time:

“And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.” Gen 1:8 ESV

It seems clear to me that the hermenuetic for day to year principle is violating the logical fallacy of begging the question as it has already assumed 1844 and must use whichever verse in the bible it can to justify its existence.  Problem is by the same logic incorporated for day to year principle I could simply assert that a day is a thousand years (2 Ptr 3:8) so in 1,150,000 years from its start date we can expect fulfillment.  As far as I am concerned Daniel 8:14 is speaking of 1150 literal 24 hour days that would contain two (2) temple sacrifices at each end.  I see no Biblical reason to assume that any lens be placed on top of them.

The most common objection I will see to this argument I have just presented is that Daniel 8:17, within the context of the preceding verses is clear that the “vision is for the time of the end”.  The problem is that this passage does not define “time of the end”.  Does it mean time of the end of the age preceding the Advent of Christ?  Does it mean end of the world?  We can’t say for sure based only on verse 17.

Though I actually believe the end he is speaking of here is referring to Christ that is not my main point, and would go beyond the scope of this post.  My main point is that even if the referent of “the end” in verse 17 is eschatological that doesn’t transform verse 14 into years.  That would simply mean that we are still waiting on a little horn to trample the temple for 1150 days at some point in the future.  By no means can you pull 2300 years out of Daniel 8:14 unless you already have your mind made up ahead of time.

“Shall not come into Judgement”

it-is-finished

This is the second post in a series on the Investigative Judgment, for the previous entry please click HERE.

A key piece of the puzzle on the Investigative Judgment is that Ellen White teaches it is the Judgment for believers only.

“…So in the great day of final atonement and investigative judgment, the only cases considered are those of the professed people of God. The judgment of the wicked is a distinct and separate work, at a later period” The Great Controversy, 1950 edition, page 480

In order to back this up I have seen many SDA online will assemble unclear verses speaking about Judgment day and attempt to argue how it fits into their motif.  The problem with this is that there are many clear verses in scripture which teach that believers do not enter into Judgment at all.  The Bible teaches that we pass from death to life in this present age.

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24 ESV

The SDA that I present this verse to will generally tell me that I am reading it in the wrong version.  They argue that the King James uses the word “condemnation” instead of “Judgment”.  The problem with their argument is that at the time the King James was translated “condemnation” meant the same thing as “Judgment”.  If you want to double check my claim feel free to look up the word in a KJV Dictionary, or simply click HERE.

More relevant to this issue is that when Jesus speaks of the Judgment he uses the same Greek word “krisin”.  See below:

“The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.” Luke 11:32 ESV

“But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.” Matt 11:22 ESV

The Bible doesn’t teach that believers undergo the judgment at all, this fact alone refutes the entire premise of the Investigative Judgment.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Rom 8:1 ESV

In this next verse look closely at the tense of the verb

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Rom 5:1-2 ESV

This is not something we have to wait for or a test we have to pass in the future, we have currently in this present age put on Christ Jesus and stand blameless before God.

“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Gal 3:27 ESV

Both of these verses above speak of something that has already been done.  This is the anti-type fulfillment of what Ezekiel prophecied in chapter 37.

“Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” Eze 37:4-6 ESV

This is what happens to us today when we hear the word of God preached.  Our Lord and Savior has promised to create faith within us.  Just as Ezekiel prophecied of speaking the word of God to dry bones to bring them to life, today when the pastor preaches the Word of God Faith is created in the heart of the spiritually dead.

“How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Rom 10:14-17 ESV

This faith is created in us as a gift as Paul teaches in Ephesians.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GodEph 2:8 ESV

So to believe in the Investigative Judgment you would have to overturn all the clear soteriological texts of scripture.  You would have to believe that you are not justified until the conclusion of the Investigative Judgment process.  The Bible teaches that our salvation is now:

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13 ESV

The gospel has never been a future date of forgiveness.  We are currently forgiven of our sins right now. Notice John even uses the present tense in the first century for his flock.  Just as they could know they were saved then, we can know we are saved now.  Conversely, according to the Investigative Judgment sins of all believers are blotted out after every name of every believer has been reviewed, which would be in a future date after 1844.

In contradiction to Ellen White, the scripture I posted above teaches that we are saved here and now in this very present time in the preaching of the word by the death burial and resurrection of Christ.  You cannot have it both ways.

“And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38 ESV

Repent and be baptized now, the promise is for now not for a future date.  God bless, please feel free to drop any comments down below.

“Seated at the Right hand of the throne of God”

John-Singleton-Copley-1775

This is the first post in a series I am blogging on the Investigative Judgment.  To kick this off I am going to cover the teaching of Ellen White that Jesus did not enter the Most Holy in heaven until 1844.  Without this piece of the Investigative Judgment the rest of the doctrine falls with it.  To summarize, Ellen White taught that when Jesus Christ first ascended into heaven he entered only the first apartment of the temple in heaven where he performed an intercessory mission until October 22 1844.

According to the motif, on that date Jesus entered the Most Holy section of the temple in heaven for the first time.  This is very important to SDA because in their early days the advent movement lead by William Miller had predicted that the world would end on that date.  When the second coming didn’t happen it was a huge blow to all of those who held the belief.  Many had sold their farms and possessions expecting to leave the planet.

Shortly after what SDA call the “Great Disappointment” a member of the advent movement claimed to receive a vision.

“Heaven seemed to open to my view, and I saw distinctly and clearly, that instead of our high priest coming out of the most holy of the heavenly sanctuary to come to this earth on the tenth day of the seventh month, at the end of the 2300 days, that he for the first time entered on that day the second apartment of that sanctuary; and that he had a work to perform in the Most Holy before coming to this earth” -Hiram Edson 1844 Cornfield Vision

This vision was given a prophetic blessing by Ellen G White when she affirmed with the following:

“Thus those who followed in the light of the prophetic word that, instead of coming to the earth at the termination of the 2300 days in 1844, Christ then entered the Most Holy place of the heavenly sanctuary to perform the closing work of atonement preparatory to his coming.” The Great Controversy, p. 422

What I am addressing in this post is that a fundamental flaw in this view is that the Bible clearly teaches Jesus went to the Most Holy place directly after his ascension.  There is no teaching in scripture that he waited ~1811 years first.  Please review the verses pasted below:

“So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.” Mark 16:19 ESV

“that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,”  Eph 1:20 ESV

“But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”  Acts 7:55-56 ESV

Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.  Rom 8:34 ESV

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”  Col 3:1 ESV

“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,”  Heb 1:3 ESV

“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”  Heb 6:19-20 ESV

“Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,”  Heb 8:1 ESV

“But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,”  Heb 10:12 ESV

“looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”  Heb 12:2 ESV

“who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.”  1 Ptr 3:22 ESV

“The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.” Rev 3:21 ESV

“‘The Lord said to my Lord,  “Sit at my right hand,  until I put your enemies under your feet”’?  Matt 22:44 ESV

Please notice the following verbiage that is used in the above passages, particularly that there was no time gap in between the ascension and the arrival of Christ to the right hand of the Father.

“is seated at”

“he sat down”

“who is at”

Clearly these phrases are all in the past or present tense, not in the future.  In response many SDA will assert that Jesus had to pass through the Holy Place before getting to the Most Holy because of the construction and layout of the earthly temple.  The problem with that argument is that by the time the apostles are writing the above verses Jesus was already in the Most Holy place in the universe.  They refer to it as a place that he both already went to and currently resided in the first century.  For SDA theology to be correct Christ would have had to enter into the most holy place on Oct 22, 1844.

Some SDA assert that the throne room must be in the holy place instead of the Most Holy.  This doesn’t even work with their system of teaching.  The reason for that is SDA believe that the ministry of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary is an anti-type fulfillment of the earthly sanctuary.  If this were true  one would have to note that God resided in the Most Holy of the earthly sanctuary, therefore to be in keeping with that motif the same must also be true in the Heavenly Sanctuary.

For the record I don’t believe there is any Biblical reason to assume that the temple on earth was a replica of the one in heaven.  That is an SDA-ism not cleary taught in scripture anywhere.  But even if it were true, the fact is that in the earthly temple God always dwelt in the Most Holy.  In these verses Jesus is sitting right next to God the Father, so even if the temple in heaven is the same then that is where Jesus would have gone immediately to in ~33 A.D. not 1844.

Bear in mind, as the quotes above from SDA teaching clearly state, for the Investigative Judgment to be relevant with regards to the date of Oct 22 1844 then all of the above scripture must be false.  You have to choose between Ellen White and scripture on this, you can’t have both.

Ellen White Denies Deity of Christ

408923_247114988699281_100002023463473_605563_179444531_n

For a Biblical breakdown on the Deity of Christ please click here.  Below I am going to present a few troubling quotes in proper context and attempt to get a better understanding of Ellen White’s view on the doctrine.

“The Eternal Father, the unchangeable one, gave his only begotten Son, tore from his bosom Him who was made in the express image of his person, and sent him down to earth to reveal how greatly he loved mankind.” EGW, Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 07-09-1895, “The Duty of the Minister and the People,” Par. 14.

The quote above is troubling, she is plainly stating that Jesus Christ was “made”.  Those who have studied scripture know that Jesus is uncreated, thus it would not be accurate to refer to him as “made”.

Below we see another troubling quote of Ellen White, where she is directly stating that Jesus wasn’t God.

“The man Christ Jesus was not the Lord God Almighty” (Letter 32, 1899, quoted in the Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 5, p. 1129).

I’ve passed this around and many will complain that the context clarifies her statement though.  The problem is that there is no clarification that changes “not” into “is”.  One must engage in sophistry to twist her words around another way.  No matter how you shake it out she is confessing a heresy.  Either she is dividing the two natures of Christ into two persons entirely and confessing Nestorianism or she is abrogating the divine nature with the human and confessing some form of Arianism.

I think it is the latter as that plays in well with her comments in Patriarchs and Prophets.

“The exaltation of the Son of God as equal with the Father was represented as an injustice to Lucifer, who, it was claimed, was also entitled to reverence and honor.” EGW, Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 37

It is common knowledge that Arianism and Anti-Trinitarianism were widely held views in the early Seventh Day Adventist Church.  Since I do not believe Ellen White was a prophet I have no trouble whatsoever accepting that she was catering to her audience by teaching views in line with those heresies.

Over time these heresies in  the SDA Church have watered down a great deal.  The problem is that the teachings of Ellen White are still commonly used in the SDA Church and despite their formal rejection of Arianism the themes and images conveyed in her writings taint their views.  Just to give a personal example, when I was an SDA I pictured the Trinity as a Tri-unity of three beings united in a common purpose.  Though their fundamental beliefs don’t read as such since the local teachers of the Church read her books, when the topic of the Trinity comes up it is taught using the themes and imagery that she uses.

My goal in this post is to prove this claim by analyzing Patriarchs and Prophets pages 34-37.  Every so often I will drop in a verse or two which should clarify the Biblical doctrine being maligned by Ellen White.

“The Sovereign of the universe was not alone in His work of beneficence. He had an associate–a co-worker who could appreciate His purposes, and could share His joy in giving happiness to created beings. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” John 1:1, 2. Christ, the Word, the only begotten of God, was one with the eternal Father–one in nature, in character, in purpose–the only being that could enter into all the counsels and purposes of God.”  Patriarchs and Prophets pg 34

Though there are many problems in the above statement what is most glaring is that she qualifies “one in nature” with character and purpose and then states Jesus as being the “only being that could enter”.

Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity not the second being.  The doctrine of the Trinity is ONE BEING expressed in three persons.  Ellen White is teaching a tri-unity of three beings in purpose rather than the Holy Trinity that the Bible teaches.

“The Father wrought by His Son in the creation of all heavenly beings” Patriarchs and Prophets pg 34

The problem with this is the Bible doesn’t say that the Father created through the Son in these verses (John 1:1-5,  Col 1:16).  Rather they attribute creation entirely to the Son.  The only way of harmonizing this with other passages that also ascribe creation to the Father and to the Holy Spirit is the doctrine of the Trinity.  God is one being in three persons.  Here in this above quote Ellen is separating the persons of the Trinity into different beings acting through each other.

“So long as all created beings acknowledged the allegiance of love, there was perfect harmony throughout the universe of God. It was the joy of the heavenly host to fulfill the purpose of their Creator.” Patriarchs and Prophets pg 35

Though it is not entirely clear in this passage what Ellen means by “all created beings” and “the universe of God” we know from other writings that she taught there are beings on other planets, like Jupiter for example.  Nowhere in scripture does it clearly state that beings live on Jupiter or any other planets except for earth.

“Little by little Lucifer came to indulge the desire for self-exaltation” Patriarchs and Prophets pg 35

This is important because we see the first mention of Satan desiring exaltation in Ellen’s writings.  I want to point this out because I think it is key in defining her use of the word exaltation.  Simply notice for now that the Devil wishes to be exalted.  Right after stating this EGW quotes Isaiah 14:13 “Thou has said in thine heart, …. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God…” Isaiah 14:13, 14.  So we can see that in using the word “exaltation” with regards to the Devils desires she is referencing a passage in Isaiah where the one being spoken of desires to be exalted to a place not only equal to but above God.  For one to be exalted to a level higher than God they would logically have to start at a level that is lower than God in one fashion or another.

“And coveting the glory with which the infinite Father had invested His Son, this prince of angels aspired to power that was the prerogative of Christ alone.” Patriarchs and Prophets pg 35

This is an interesting statement as she states that the Devil is “coveting the glory with which the infinite father had invested”.  How is it that the father “invested” glory in an uncreated one?  By definition the glory of an uncreated Deity is intrinsic unto themselves.  The Bible teaches that Christ already had the Glory of God before he humbled himself, and he doesn’t ascribe the pre-incarnate Glory he possessed as something given to him, but rather as something he simply had.

“And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.” John 17:5 KJV

Above we see the Son speaking of his Glory, the glory “which [he] had”.  It does not say ‘glorify me with the glory you once invested in me’.  The later would work with Ellen Whites statement but the former does not.

Instead we see later on page 36 the following:

“The King of the universe summoned the heavenly hosts before Him, that in their presence He might set forth the true position of His Son” Patriarchs and Prophets pg 36

Here we see the “King” setting “forth the true position of His Son”.  This makes no sense for anyone who believes what the Bible because as Christ did not humble himself before creation, but after.  What we are seeing here on page 36 is an event that Lucifer later looks back to as an injustice.  Putting it bluntly, Ellen White is saying that Lucifer and the other angels were actual eye witnesses to an event in which Christ is exalted to the level of God.  It’s not enough that she has to teach Arian heresy but she is going to accuse the angels in heaven of being witnesses to and praising such a thing.

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:5-8 KJV

The reason you can Biblically assert that the Father exalted the Son (Php 2:9) without lessening the deity of the Son is that before he was exalted by the Father he humbled himself.  Instead with EGW we saw above that the Son was exalted before creation, before the incarnation. That means she is teaching that Christ was in a humbled state in heaven.  Since the manner in which he humbled himself in the incarnation is defined as taking the form of a man what possible “lower” state was Christ exalted from in heaven according to Ellen White?  Fair question, and it is one she seems to explore later on the same page.

“Before the assembled inhabitants of heaven the King declared that none but Christ, the Only Begotten of God, could fully enter into His purposes, and to Him it was committed to execute the mighty counsels of His will. The Son of God had wrought the Father’s will in the creation of all the hosts of heaven” Patriarchs and Prophets pg 36

Notice she connects a defining line between “Only Begotten of God” and “wrought the Father’s will in the creation of all the hosts of heaven”.  Tying this in with the fact that she is teaching a lesser state of Christ prior to a heavenly exaltation I can only conclude that her meaning by Begotten here is that she is saying Christ is the first creation of the Father that created everything else.

The problem is that this would imply that Christ is a created being.  The Bible removes that as a possibility in the following verses:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” John 1:1-3 KJV

In the above verse we see Jesus being ascribed with the following creative works “and without him was not any thing made that was made”.  Logically, if Jesus was created then nothing was created because one would have to assert that Christ created himself.

“ His desire for supremacy returned, and envy of Christ was once more indulged.” Patriarchs and Prophets pg 37

Notice we see the theme of the jealousy of the Devil re-appear.  Keeping everything in context, he is jealous of Christ.  The Devil desires to be exalted from a lower place in created order to a higher place.  And in the narrative of this heavenly story he is jealous of that which he just witnessed, the Son who was in a lower place of created order and was just exalted to a higher one.  This is a full blown denial of the Deity of Christ in the writings of Ellen White.

“Yet the Son of God was exalted above him , as one in power and authority with the Father…..

The exaltation of the Son of God as equal with the Father was represented as an injustice to Lucifer, who, it was claimed, was also entitled to reverence and honor” Patriarchs and Prophets pg 37

Above we see that the exaltation of Christ is again cited, a recent event that Lucifer just witnessed in the previous page, and he is jealous of it.  The obvious problem of a pre-incarnate exaltation is that to exalt one must be lower in some fashion than they were before they were exalted otherwise the word has no meaning.  So in effect, Ellen White is teaching that Jesus Christ was a created being and less than God before he was exalted to the level God, and that this exaltation was what the Devil had desired for himself.  There is no getting around this, Ellen White functionally denies the Deity of Christ in her writings.

What does the reader feel about this?  Do you want to follow the teachings of a false prophet that denies Jesus?  Is she not promoting one of the false Christ’s that Jesus warned us about when he was on Earth?
